I decided that I wanted to print out the mind-map, so I selected a paper size of A3 and shrank the map to 25 of its normal. If you would like to see how your maps will look after being pushed through an iThoughts import/export then drop me a line and I will test it here for you. iThoughts supports the native format of all the major mind mapping apps. I use both (Xmind and Freeplane - I dropped FreeMind) and many others, some not free or open source. Freeplane is developing faster than FreeMind and is also worth a look. Multi page mind maps should not be used with iThoughts. Answer (1 of 5): I'd say the best open source mind mapping software is Xmind. XMind and Novamind) iThoughts will only import the FIRST page/sheet. One important exception to this is multi page/sheet mind maps (e.g. them to your mind maps (a native capability in the paid version of XMind). It also supports strong encryption, but I don’t know if I’d trust it with really sensitive stuff since it’s not been peer reviewed by anyone as far as I know. Generally speaking, however, the 'important' information within the map is maintained between import/export (text, notes, layout, links etc.) It is usually the more 'aesthetic' attributes that are an issue (text styling etc.) Craig Scott, the developer of the excellent iThoughts app for the iPhone. iThoughts is a mindmapping tool for Windows (iOS and Mac versions are also available.) Mindmapping enables you to visually organise your thoughts, ideas and information. (There’s a way to take short handwritten notes directly in iThoughts, but it’s pretty primitive compared to a dedicated app). This can be an issue when re-exporting as the unrecognised/unsupported attributes really are discarded at import time and will therefore not be present in the subsequent export. iThoughts doesn't distinguish between line and fill colour, so when importing it picks one and discards the other. Most desktop apps have a different colour attribute for line, fill and text. A good example of this is when dealing with colours. If an attribute is unsupported by iThoughts then it may be 'interpreted'. If an attribute or setting is not recognised by iThoughts then it is simply ignored. When iThoughts imports a 3rd party format it converts it into the ITMZ format (native to iThoughts.) This conversion process is 'lossy'.
